Casa Burani B&B
The house was built in the Nineteenth century and is a typical example of an Italian farmhouse in Reggio Emilia. This type of architecture is called “porta morta”. It is organized in a very simple and practical way. The house’s concept is composed basically of two main cores; the domestic living core where the farmer’s family lived and the stable on the ground floor. The second floor was used as the hayloft and work area for the family. The connecting building is a huge arcade with two large wooden main doors, each one placed in front of the other. These doors could be opened or closed according to the seasons. Due to the “porta morta” farmhouse’s block following the North/South orientation axis and the results are totally practical. During the winter the south main door was opened to let the warm air and sunshine into the building, while the north door remained closed. Vice-versa during the summer; shutting the south main door and opening the north door. One would allow the room to take full advantage of the cool, windy air coming from the north. Of course both big arcade main doors were supplied with two small pedestrian entrances also. That’s the reason “porta morta” literally translates into “dead door”. Both the living core and working core are the same size as it was meant to be a large stable to accommodate a great amount of work and animals while the other large enough for a huge family.
